Did you say safety?
Hello All,
The other day I went out with one of the trainers to shoot. I know the basic safety rules, but just knowing the basics is not enough. You must practice the basics! I had on boots, cargo pants that covered the tops of my boots, glasses and ear protection. However my shirt and my hat we're not correct. I had a v-neck shirt on and NO hat. These two things allowed a bullet to go down my shirt and did not protect my head from the casings that came out of the gun. When casings are ejected, they are launched from the gun into the air. Normally, you will not get hit by them. But things do happen. As I was shooting one of the casings went down my shirt. I felt the heat for the casing and pulled my shirt so the casing would fall straight through. No harm done.
A few shoots later, things were more heated. Remember how I said that I was not wearing my hat? I found out why it should never be forgotten. I shot my gun, the extremely hot casing went up and when it came down it went in between my glasses and my cheek bone. This was immediately noticed! I could tell it had burned my cheek. The first thing I did was lay the gun down, (the instructor did praise me for this being the first thing I did). The second thing I did was say an inappropriate word while taking my glasses off. After I got my glasses off, I looked at my instructor and said I'm going to go get my hat. Once my hat was back on my head, I continued with my lesson.
Safety should always be your #1 priority when it comes to firearms. How you store them, transport them, handle them, fire them, and yes – how you dress when training are all extremely important.
